Gboard Finally Realizes You Wear Headphones: Beta Hints at Bluetooth Mic Support

Gboard is a pretty solid keyboard app for Android phones. On Google Pixel phones, it packs in some extra perks, such as voice commands for editing dedicated text and advanced voice typing tools that allow you to dictate multiple messages in one go. It seems Gboard is now gearing up to receive an important feature: the ability to use your Bluetooth earbuds’ mic for voice typing. 

Gboard may soon get Bluetooth earbuds mic support for voice typing

Folks at Android Authority, while digging through version 17.1.2 (beta) of the Gboard app, have found evidence that suggests Google is working on offering support for voice input through Bluetooth devices. The feature reportedly appears as a new setting in Gboard’s voice typing menu. As you’d expect, it lets you switch from your phone’s microphone to the mic on a connected Bluetooth device.

As things stand currently, Gboard relies on your phone’s mic for voice typing. This is even if your earbuds/headphones are connected. It can be inconvenient at times. You’ll have to bring the phone closer to your face, especially in noisy situations. This change means that you can speak normally into your connected Bluetooth earbuds or headphones, making voice typing more convenient than before.

The report claims that they were able to enable the feature and test it using the OnePlus Buds 3. It reportedly works as expected, where the voice input is picked up from the earbuds’ microphone. Before you get all excited, it’s currently not clear when this feature will roll out widely. Google hasn’t announced this officially yet. It is still reportedly testing it internally.

Considering that Android Authority was able to enable it and make it work, it shouldn’t be long before it’s available to the public. We will make sure to update as and when that happens.
