If you hate ads on YouTube, then subscribing to YouTube Premium is the way to go. It is currently priced at $13.90 a month, which isn’t too bad. However, if you’re looking for something cheaper, YouTube Premium Lite at $7.99 a month is a more affordable alternative. Now, it looks like YouTube is bringing new features to Premium Lite that could make it an even more compelling option.

YouTube Premium Lite gets new features: downloads and background play

For those unfamiliar, YouTube Premium Lite basically removes ads from YouTube. Even then, it was kind of limited because it only removed ads from non-music-related videos. If you don’t really watch that many music videos, then it makes sense. Otherwise, subscribing to YouTube Premium might be better.

That being said, YouTube has announced an update that brings new features to Premium Lite. Now, subscribers can access features like video downloads and background play. However, as with the ad removal feature, downloads and background play also come with limitations.

According to this Google support page, “These features are not available on Shorts or on music content, such as official/premium music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs, as well as user generated content that includes content from our music partners (for example: covers, dance videos, or a vlog with a popular song in the background).”

Once again, if you don’t really watch these types of content, then it doesn’t matter.

Should you subscribe to YouTube Premium instead?

Right now, many of us are facing subscription fatigue. Everything seems to be subscription-based these days, from online services, apps, games, and more. YouTube Premium by itself at $13.90 a month isn’t expensive. However, when you factor in streaming services like Disney+, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple Music, Spotify, and so on, it adds up. Soon, you’ll be looking at subscription fees of $100 a month, if not more.

But YouTube Premium itself is a compelling subscription. YouTube is basically the main platform for the majority of videos. Removing ads, supporting offline downloads, and background play are great reasons for subscribing. It also comes with YouTube Music in the bundle, which will save you on one extra subscription.

Ultimately, this boils down to your needs. If you’re just looking for a way to legally disable ads on YouTube, then Premium Lite is the cheapest way to go.
