YouTube Music Can Now Generate AI Playlists Based on Your Vibes

AH YouTube Music lyric sharing

This week has brought some new features to YouTube Music, although not all of them have been good. First, we saw the platform limit access to the Lyrics feature to free users. On the other hand, YouTube Music is getting a new AI-powered playlist generator allowing Premium subscribers on iOS and Android to create custom mixes through simple text or voice prompts based on their feelings or vibes. Both movements seem to point in the same direction: encouraging more people to get a paid tier.

YouTube Music gets AI playlist generator for Premium subscribers

The premise is straightforward but ambitious. Instead of manually browsing through albums and artists to build the perfect mix, users can now simply tell the app what they need. By heading to the “Library” tab and selecting “AI playlist,” a space appears to describe a specific vibe.

The possibilities are vast. You can request anything from “melancholic post-rock for a rainy afternoon” to a “progressive house mix for a chill party.” The tool interprets abstract concepts and moods to select tracks from YouTube’s massive catalog, which includes official releases, live performances, and remixes that are often unavailable on other platforms.

Catching up with others

This move by Google does not happen in a vacuum. It comes just a month after Spotify launched its own “Prompted Playlists.” Google’s latest move only helps intensify what many call the AI arms race in the streaming industry. Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Deezer are also testing or implementing similar tools to stay relevant in the battle for user retention.

YouTube previously offered a similar feature called “Ask Music.” But this new integration places the technology directly into the playlist creation flow.

A Premium perk (for now)

Currently, Google is keeping this upgrade behind a paywall. The feature is available exclusively to the more than 100 million YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium subscribers.

It remains to be seen how accurate these algorithms will be in the long run. One of the biggest challenges for any music AI is understanding context; asking for “intense workout music” and receiving death metal when you actually wanted high-energy pop can be a jarring experience. However, with Gemini’s infrastructure backing these features, Google is betting that its system will understand your preferences better than anyone else.
