Google Messages Getting Real-Time Location & Easier Group Chats Creation

Google Messages has come a long way from being a basic texting tool. In its latest push to close the gap with third-party messaging apps, Google is introducing features that focus on real-time utility and a more streamlined user experience. Two major updates are currently making waves in the beta versions of the Google Messages app: the arrival of live location sharing and a redesigned workflow for starting individual and group chats.

Real-time location sharing for Google Messages

One of the most requested features is finally arriving. According to a recent deep dive into the Google Messages beta by Android Authority, the app is moving beyond static address sharing. While you could previously send a single pin of where you were, the new “Real-time Location” feature allows you to share your live movement for a specific period.

The interface for this feature is integrated directly into the attachment sheet. Users can choose to share their location for one hour, the rest of the day, or a time of their choosing. A permanent banner at the top of the chat reminds you that your location is being shared and shows you exactly how much time is left.

Interestingly, this feature is quite inclusive. Even if the person you are messaging doesn’t have the latest update, they will receive a link. This link works on any device or app version as it opens in the Google Find Hub app or a web browser.

Simplifying Group Chats creation

Beyond location sharing, Google is also rethinking how we start our chats. Traditionally, the app forced users to choose between a one-on-one message or a group chat right from the start by tapping a specific “Create group” button.

A new workflow discovered in the latest beta simplifies this process. Now, the app treats every new message as a potential group chat by default. When you start a new conversation, you can simply select a single contact and hit “Next,” or continue selecting multiple people to form a group. While this adds one extra tap for individual messages, it significantly speeds up the process of getting a group together.

We still don’t know when these features will move from beta testing to a wider release. Keeping your app updated through the Play Store is the best way to ensure you get access to these tools as soon as they roll out globally.
