Gboard's new cursor mode is going to be a game-changing feature

AH Gboard no punctuation

The Gboard app is getting a new feature that’s called Cursor Mode, which would let users move the cursor around the screen for more accurate typing. Technically, this is a feature that already exists in a different form in the app. Glide Cursor Control allows users to move the cursor left or right in the typing area. Although this movement is somewhat limiting, it’s much better than trying to tap on the exact area you want the cursor to go.

The new cursor mode, however, adds some freedom of movement to this whole function. While the feature isn’t yet available, it was discovered in a beta version of the Gboard app. Android Authority reports that it was able to get the feature running even though it’s currently unreleased. Since the feature was discovered in a beta version, there’s a chance it won’t be long before it’s actually available.

The cursor mode in Gboard will move the cursor in any direction

With glide cursor control already available in Gboard, one might wonder why Google would add the new cursor mode to the app. After all, the two functions are not that different. That being said, you can think of the cursor mode as a more advanced version of glide cursor control. It lets you move the cursor in more directions, as opposed to just left or right. You can move the cursor up or down as well, and reportedly off the typing area.

To activate cursor mode, you press and hold the space bar, and this replaces the keyboard area with a big trackpad. Moving your finger around this trackpad will move the cursor. This is a new function for Gboard, but it’s not new to Android in general. Other keyboard apps on Android offer it. As useful as this feature might sound, it’s important to note that it won’t necessarily be rolled out. It was possible to activate in the latest beta version of Gboard, but that doesn’t automatically make it a feature that Google is guaranteed to launch, even if it seems likely.
