The Galaxy S27 Ultra Could Revive Samsung's Coolest Camera Trick From 2018

Samsung might reintroduce a fairly popular feature that it canned after the Galaxy S9. That is the variable aperture. Back on the Galaxy S9 in 2018, Samsung introduced dual-aperture, which allowed the camera to change its physical aperture (not through software like some cameras do these days). It was a very cool feature that actually worked quite well. But it only lasted a year.

Well, now it looks like Samsung is looking to bring it back, at least according to tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS). This likely wouldn’t be included on the Galaxy S26 series, as that set of devices is virtually finished already. This would likely be part of the Galaxy S27 series, and likely exclusive to the Galaxy S27 Ultra.

This would allow Samsung to better compete with the iPhone, though we all know that Samsung needs to do more with their cameras than just adding a variable aperture. Huawei actually brought this feature to the Pura 80 Ultra this year. And in my experience, it worked extremly well.

What is variable aperture?

What exactly is a variable aperture? Well, the aperture refers to the adjustable opening in a camera lens that controls how much light actually reaches the sensor. So a f/1.8 aperture is much wider than a f/4.0 aperture.

A variable aperture means that the aperture is actually changing. On the Galaxy S9+ it would change from f/1.5 to f/2.4. That was a pretty small change, but the variable aperture on Huawei’s Pura 80 Ultra did much bigger changes. It went from f/1.6 to f/4.0, making it much more noticeable.

Why would you want a variable aperture? Well different environments need more lighting than others. Different photography styles need more or less light. Typically, with a wider aperture, you can also get more creamy bokeh, one of the reasons why I love shooting at f/1.8 on my mirrorless camera.

Bringing this to upcoming Samsung phones is a good start, but Samsung also needs to improve the hardware – particularly the telephoto sensors.
