Huawei's Mate X7 Premium Foldable & Mate 80 Launch: Up To 8,000 Nits & Kirin Power
Huawei has released two new flagship products: the Huawei Mate X7 premium foldable and the “traditional” Mate 80 series of phones. This dual launch gets the company’s latest custom Kirin chipsets and HarmonyOS 6 across its premium mobile portfolio.
Both device families emphasize hardware refinement and specific performance claims, particularly in durability and display technology.
The Huawei Mate X7 foldable: Focusing on durability and size
The new Mate X7 brings several notable updates to Huawei’s foldable design. The handset is marginally slimmer and lighter than its predecessor, measuring 9.5mm when folded and 4.5mm unfolded. It weighs just 235 grams with its aluminum frame.
A key feature is the upgraded durability rating: IP58 and IP59 ingress protection. The Mate X7 can resist dust and splashes, with the IP59 rating reflecting protection against close-range, high-pressure water jets. This is pretty good for a phone with a folding display mechanism.

The displays are slightly larger, featuring an 8-inch main screen and a 6.49-inch cover screen. Both use LTPO OLED technology with a variable refresh rate of 1-120Hz. Powering the Mate X7 is the latest in-house Kirin 9030 Pro chipset. For photography, the phone retains the 50MP main camera with a variable aperture but updates the telephoto unit to a new 50MP sensor offering 3.5x optical zoom. The device uses a 5,600mAh dual-cell battery, supporting 66W wired and 50W wireless charging.
The Mate X7 is scheduled for open sales in China starting December 5. Pricing for the baseline 12GB/256GB version starts at CNY 12,999 (approximately $1,830). The top-tier 20GB/1TB model is priced at CNY 17,999 (around $2,534).
Huawei Mate 80 series: 8,000-nit display claims and chipset tiers
The slab phones, the Mate 80 and Mate 80 Pro, share several key components. Both models feature a large 6.75-inch LTPO OLED screen protected by second-generation Kunlun Glass. Huawei claims the panel can reach a peak brightness of up to 8,000 nits, a substantial figure in the smartphone market. They also share a large 5,750mAh battery and feature satellite communication capabilities.
Differentiation between the models centers on processor and charging speed. The Mate 80 has the Kirin 9020 chipset and offers 66W wired charging. Meanwhile, the Mate 80 Pro features the faster Kirin 9030 chip and supports faster 100W wired in addition to 80W wireless charging. The Mate 80 Pro Max variant integrates the same Kirin 9030 Pro found in the Mate X7. It’s noteworthy that the Mate 80 Pro 1TB + 16GB RAM also integrates the Kirin 9030 Pro.

Imaging capabilities also vary. All models share a 50MP main sensor with variable aperture (f/1.4-f/4.0). There’s also the same 40MP ultra-wide lens with f/2.2 aperture and 120° FOV. The biggest differences between cameras lie in the zoom area. The standard Mate 80 brings a 12MP periscope sensor with support for 5.5x optical zoom and an f/3.4 aperture. The Mate 80 Pro opts for another approach with a brighter 48MP periscope lens (f/2.1 aperture) and support for 4x optical zoom. Finally, the Mate 80 Pro Max has two 50MP periscope lenses with support for 4x and 6.2x optical zoom.
Regarding price, the base Huawei Mate 80 starts at CNY 4,699 (around $663). On the other hand, the Huawei Mate 80 Pro costs CNY 5,999 (around $845). Finally, the Huawei Mate 80 Pro Max is available for CNY 7,999 (around $1,130).
