Apple has officially introduced the M5 chip, marking the next step for its custom silicon lineup. This new processor is immediately debuting inside the latest iPad Pro, 14-inch MacBook Pro, and Apple Vision Pro refreshes. The hardware platform pushes the capabilities of all three devices with a core focus on advanced performance and, crucially, artificial intelligence.

The M5 is built on a new 3-nanometer technology. However, the biggest architectural shift comes in the graphics department. The new 10-core GPU now features a Neural Accelerator within each core. This specific design choice is a major hardware bet on the future of AI. Apple states that this change allows the M5 to achieve over four times the peak performance for GPU-based AI workloads compared to the M4 chip. This means tasks like running generative AI models, like complex image generators, will run notably faster directly on your device.

Apple’s new M5 chip: Up to 15% faster CPU and 45% higher graphics performance

Beyond the AI capabilities, the M5 delivers an across-the-board performance increase. The chip includes a 10-core CPU setup—four high-performance cores and six high-efficiency cores. This results in up to a 15% gain in performance for demanding multitasking and professional applications compared to the M4. Graphics performance is also up, with the M5 delivering up to 45% higher graphics capabilities over its predecessor. This improvement will benefit everything from creative rendering projects to high-end gaming.

Unified power for heavy workloads

One of the less flashy but most important upgrades is in memory. The M5 significantly increases the unified memory bandwidth to 153GB/s, marking a nearly 30% boost. Unified memory is essential because it allows the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine to access a large single pool of memory quickly. This increased bandwidth directly translates into smoother multitasking, faster data transfer for large creative files, and the ability to load and run larger AI models completely on the device without having to connect to the cloud.

With its improved 16-core Neural Engine complementing the new GPU accelerators, the M5 is engineered to accelerate everything from general AI-driven features in macOS and iPadOS to third-party professional suites.
