NotebookLM's New Audio Features Will Change How You Learn

NotebookLM, Google’s AI-powered research assistant, has received major new features in the past few months, as compared to other AI-backed services by the firm. After launching the Audio Overviews feature last year, Google released Video Overviews functionality for the service this July. The search titan has now improved NotebookLM’s Audio Overview feature by adding new audio formats.
NotebookLM now offers new Audio Overview formats: Brief, Critique, and Debate
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Google has announced that it is adding three new Audio Overview formats, including Brief, Critique, and Debate. These formats join the already existing Deep Dive Audio Overview format. The new formats will provide users with more ways to engage with their sources beyond the existing Deep Dive style.
The new NotebookLM audio formats give users the flexibility to meet their needs, allowing them to either understand the main ideas, get expert feedback, or explore different perspectives.
The Brief format provides a bite-sized overview that helps people quickly grasp the core information from their sources. These audio summaries are just one to two minutes long. The Critique format delivers an expert-style overview of user sources. It can also provide constructive feedback and guidance to help users improve their source material.
As for the new Debate audio format, it delivers a more structured discussion between two AI-powered audio hosts. Using this format, users can bring out the different perspectives from the elected sources.
Rolling out to all users across all supported 80 languages
Google has started rolling out the new NotebookLM Audio Overview formats to everyone in all of its 80 supported languages. It’s worth mentioning that each format includes new AI voices. However, the firm hasn’t given any specific details about the differences between the new voices.
NotebookLM users can access the new audio formats by tapping the pencil icon in the Audio Overview card. These additions join existing customization options, like language, length, and prompt-based adjustments. NotebookLM rolled out the new formats soon after upgrading Audio Overviews to be more detailed and comprehensive across all languages.
