Apple will reportedly do so first with its upcoming iPhones, replacing the “Plus” model with an ultra-thin “Air.” Now, a fresh report has offered a glimpse into the battery capacity of the upcoming iPhone 17 Air, including some images showing a cell in a metal case.
A leaker known as Majin Bu has shared images of an alleged battery pack for this new model, expected to launch in September 2025, revealing some key design choices and potential implications for daily use. Thus, the ultra-thin profile will require a notable compromise in terms of battery capacity.

According to the report, the iPhone 17 Air will have a battery of around 2,900 mAh. This figure points to a deliberate decision by Apple to prioritize a thinner phone, aligning with the “Air” aesthetic. To put it simply, less space inside means a smaller cell. This capacity could make the iPhone 17 Air’s battery life potentially the shortest among iPhone models since the iPhone 13 series.
In fact, internal testing reportedly suggests that only 60% to 70% of users could get a full day of use without needing a recharge. So, this device will target a very specific audience that values its particular aesthetic.
Despite the reduced capacity, Apple appears to be focusing on clever engineering to manage performance. The battery itself is rumored to feature a steel case, a technology first introduced with the iPhone 16 Pro. This steel casing isn’t just for show; it helps to significantly improve heat dissipation and enhance cell density. Better thermal management could, in turn, support more efficient charging, even if the exact speeds are not yet known. The L-shaped battery design is also optimized to fit seamlessly with the phone’s reduced logic board.
Beyond the capacity, the iPhone 17 Air’s battery might also incorporate new adhesives. These would be similar to the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, making future battery replacements potentially easier. This is a welcome detail for longevity, although potentially forced by European regulations.

To mitigate concerns about battery life, Apple reportedly has a few strategies up its sleeve. The expected A19 chip will surely bring improved power efficiency, helping to squeeze a little more juice out of the battery. Additionally, the iOS 26 stable update could bring a new “Adaptive Power Mode,” which could further optimize power consumption.
Perhaps the most direct solution, however, is a rumored official battery case as an optional accessory for the iPhone 17 Air. This would offer users who need more power a way to extend their phone’s endurance. However, eventually, the device would get chunkier, so the handset would partially lose its main selling point.
The iPhone 17 Air definitely aims to be a unique product in the smartphone market. Although Samsung got ahead of the game with the launch of the Galaxy S25 Edge, Apple’s device aims to be even thinner. However, this will also lead to more compromises.
