Xperia 1 VII Trouble: Sony Halts Sales Due to Shutdowns

The launch for new mobile flagships usually goes well. We’re not talking about sales performance, but rather a smooth launch process. However, there are some cases where unexpected problems can occur. Occasionally, these issues can be so severe as to affect the product’s availability in stores. This is currently happening with the Sony Xperia 1 VII, whose sales have been halted due to random reboots and shutdowns.
The device is not having the most seamless arrival on the market. In June, reports emerged of pre-orders canceled suddenly and without apparent explanation. Now, Sony has stopped sales of the Xperia 1 VII in its native Japan.
Sony has temporarily suspended sales of the Xperia 1 VII; Japan affected
The Xperia 1 VII has obtained generally positive reviews. However, some units are experiencing random shutdowns, unexpected reboots, or simply refusing to turn on during use. This isn’t just an occasional glitch; the reports have been significant enough for Sony to take such a drastic decision.
Interestingly, this issue appears to be peculiar to the Japanese variants of the phone. Specific models like the SO-51F, SOG15, A501SO, and XQ-FS44 are listed as the affected devices. While Sony is still investigating the precise cause, there’s some speculation circulating that the problem might be linked to Japan’s unique Osaifu-Keitai mobile payment system, though this remains unconfirmed. For now, global versions of the Xperia 1 VII seem to be unaffected.
International variants seem safe
For those who already own an affected Xperia 1 VII, Sony has offered some immediate advice. Those affected should try holding both the power button and volume up button for about 20 seconds to attempt a recovery. Following that, users are advised to apply the latest software update (build number “71.0.A.2.43”), which Sony has released in an attempt to mitigate the bug. If these steps don’t resolve the issue, contacting Sony support is the next step.
A temporary sales suspension is a tough pill to swallow for any phone maker. Such glitches, especially those affecting basic functionality like power-on, can be really frustrating for users and can quickly tarnish a flagship’s reputation. Fortunately, international users of the device don’t have to worry about the issue. Let’s hope reports don’t start popping up outside of Japan in the coming days.
