TikTok, the popular social media platform, has recently come under scrutiny for its data privacy practices. Now, the European Union (EU) is pressuring TikTok to comply with the recently adopted Digital Services Act (DSA) or face a potential ban. The DSA, considered a gold standard for content and internet platform governance, provides for multiple sanctions, including a ban in the EU for repeated breaches that can threaten the life and safety of EU citizens.

This new regulation aims to bring popular social media companies, including TikTok, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook, under the watchful eye of the act, as it applies to all platforms with over 45 million users in the EU.

TikTok’s compliance with the DSA

Ever since reports of TikTok employees accessing US data emerged last year, the EU has raised concerns about its data privacy practices. In response, the company has been in discussions with the EU about data safety, misinformation, and compliance with the DSA. However, in a recent video call, EU commissioner Breton emphasized TikTok must begin adhering to these rules well before the September 1st deadline. Failure to do so could result in fines of up to 6% of TikTok’s annual revenue, or even a ban on operating in the EU.

Breton said that with a younger audience comes greater responsibility for the platform. TikTok responded to the EU by committing to following the rules outlined in the DSA and other regulations, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Code of Practice on Disinformation.

TikTok’s director of public policy, Caroline Greer, tweeted that Chew and Breton had a “good exchange” during their meeting, stating that the company “welcomed the opportunity to reiterate our commitment to the #DSA. We also outlined our efforts to ensure compliance with the GDPR & the Code of Practice on Disinformation. The safety of our users is paramount.”
